Canker Sores and Cold Sores

Canker Sores and Cold Sores

A cold sore, also called a fever blister, is caused by the herpes simplex virus. Cold sores are contagious and painful. Filled with fluid, they are usually found on or near the lips and nose. Treatment for a cold sore usually involves over-the-counter topical creams, although in some cases a doctor can prescribe antiviral medication.

A canker sore has a red border and has a lightly colored base. Canker sores grow inside of the mouth on the delicate tissue. While good oral hygiene, anesthetic, and mouth rinses will provide some relief, cold sores usually have to be simply waited out.
